Storm Rider and Chinese manhua

We've Storm Rider's first release, chp00 on mD-xD!

*laughs now that MPD has a discussion thread going on, I've decided to force start one for Storm Rider too. ^^ Not a competition mind you, but this comes from a HK comic fan/small time HK comic collector, with about a thousand odd dollars worth of HK comics. (I suspect its probably more than a thousand spent, but I'm not about to count because the end figure will be scary.. >< )

Now, what do you know about Storm Rider? It can be said to be the most popular Chinese manhua and as it was first released in around 1996-1997, it had a huge fan base in Asia. So much so that a Hong Kong live action movie was made in 1998. And apparently an animation was also done in 2005. Its popularity continued for quite a number of years, before it finally died down and now, probably only collectors still buy its Chinese releases.

I started on HK comics only at the peak of Storm Rider comics. At that time, while I rented Storm Rider comics to read, I discovered another HK comic artist, whose art work I fell in love with so much more, than that of Ma Wing Shing. And so, I sought to collect all HK comics of that one HK comic artist, He Zhi Wen. ;P And that was also when I stopped reading Storm Riders, until recently.

So, if you know more about Storm Rider comics do share them here!
May we enjoy the future releases of Storm Riders. ^^
Thanks to mD-xD for taking up the scanlation of Storm Rider!!

RE: Storm Rider and Chinese manhua

Heehee At first I thought Storm Rider is just another typical kung fu/martial arts comics. But as I read the following chapters, it's really interesting. I thought it would just be focused on one character - Cloud, but I was wrong. It's a cool manhua. ^^

RE: Storm Rider and Chinese manhua

I think Storm Riders has the traditional style, not really manga-style. That comic style is similar to Indonesian comics (not influenced by manga-style). I love the artworks! crazily vivid! <3<3

I havent read much of SR >.< maybe I'll DL the releases later. SR is very long tho!

maybe lav can supply us with more manhuas if we have more editors. IF WE HAVE MORE EDITOOOORS!

RE: Storm Rider and Chinese manhua

Hm.. SR is a typical Wuxia comics aka HK comics. I can't really explain vividly but Wuxia and Kungfu/martial arts has a little difference in Chinese terms. They are slightly different genres. Wuxia is usually set way back in time and the setting is what we call GuZhuang in Chinese, meaning old style. While Kungfu/martial arts is largely set during periods of the beginnings of modernisation and in a sense Kungfu has a more realistic fighting style, while the fighting in Wuxia cannot be achieve humanly.

I don't know what traditional style is but SR is definitely in HK comic style ;P Almost all HK comic art look like that although some are better than the others, and most of the original artworks were done in watercolor before they are CG-ed and published. ^^

uhm, but they are different from manga, very detailed in some parts... how to say, very realistic in drawing people.

Oh! lav is a master in man hua Big Grin I see what you mean by the difference between Wuxia and Kungfu, although Kungfu is unachievable for me >_>

RE: Storm Rider and Chinese manhua

Yeh they are definitely different from manga *laughs its called the HK comic art style? The first difference is that the characters are all Chinese, second realism to a greater extent and the guys are all really muscular and the females have good figure and pretty faces ^^ The females usually have a certain kind of beauty called the GuDianMei or ancient beauty (loosely translated).

I think any fan of Wuxia (swordfighting) will point out that difference easily. Kungfu was popularized by Bruce Lee, to be something that is real. Martial arts is real. While swordfighting remains in our imaginations. ^^ That's what's cool about swordfighting!

RE: Storm Rider and Chinese manhua

OMG I'm sure I have that Du Dian Mei feature <3<3 I look like Wind's mum after all~

I know films like Crouching Tiger features unrealistic Wuxia, and Jacki Chan's films tend to be more reasonable, but both for me are unachievable cos I'm not so good with physical stuff >_>;; except beating my plushies.

but I like CHinese sword fighting! people flying everywhere! Big Grin

somehow SR release is slower than MPD >_>;; is that a velo factor?

RE: Storm Rider and Chinese manhua

Ahh~~ Hero is probably the best Chinese martial arts/swordfighting movie I've ever seen. Every scene is so beautiful and perfect that every frame could be used as a standalone photograph. <3

ANYWAY. SR... haha uhh I look forward to more releases!

*hides*
